Ever wondered where your food comes from? Or how it grows? Or maybe you just want the freshest, juiciest piece of fruit? A Pick-Your-Own farm is the way to go!

Sometimes called  “U-Pick”, these farms offer a great time with family and friends, and fresh, seasonal, local produce often at affordable prices - especially in bulk. You get to spend time in the fresh air, move your body, and support locally grown food and farmers. It’s a great way to encourage the entire family to eat healthy, and may even convince some hesitant eaters to try something new!

Check out these websites for some options of farms where you can pick your own fruits, vegetables, and flowers.

How It Works
Check the farm’s website or social media for an overview of the picking process. Each farm is unique. Here are some likely options.

  • Reserve a Time - farms require you to purchase a ticket or reserve a time.
  • Walk-In - farms will allow folks to walk in without a reservation, especially if picking is plentiful.
  • Pay by container - farms have containers for you to purchase ahead of picking. Fill it up to your heart’s content!
  • Pay by the pound - bring your own container or utilize one of the farm’s to pick as much as you’d like. All of your picks will be weighed at the end.

Dress the Part
You don’t have to dress like a farmer, but you should prepare for time in the fields.

  • Sun protection - sunglasses, hats, long sleeved shirts, sun screen. Unless you’re picking from a tree, there isn’t much shade in a field.
  • Footwear - shoes or boots that can get muddy or dirty, depending on the weather. Comfortable shoes are also a must, just in case you have to walk some distance.
  • Long sleeves/Long pants - protect your arms and legs from bugs and any possible irritation from the plants (stems, leaves, thorns).
  • BYOB- bring your own bag to carry your bounty home, and any extra goodies you may find.

Season’s Eatings
Check the farm’s website or social media before booking or arriving to determine what is in season (available at the farm) and the picking conditions. Not sure what’s in season? Check out this chart. If you end up with more that you can eat right away, freeze some for later using tips found here, or preserve them in other ways with tips found here

Be Food Safe

  • Always wash your hands before and after picking your delicious produce.
  • Be sure to also wash your produce before consuming it/eating it.

Eat Your Picks!
Fresh produce can be eaten just like that - fresh! Or, try putting it in your favorite recipe. Looking to try something new? Check out our EatSmart Recipe Database for some ideas.

Check out the Amenities
Many Pick-Your-Own farms also have other amenities for families to enjoy. For example, farms could have mazes, playgrounds, hayrides/tractor rides, photo opportunities, food trucks, and more! Check online or ask at the farm about other opportunities available. They often have pre-picked produce for you to purchase or enjoy on-site.
